and 190 pages, includes an 11x 46 fold-out panorama of the Biafo Glacier
and maps to introduce the separate portfolios. The photographs were taken
on twelve Himalayan trips between 1986 and 2005 using an old fashioned
4x5 Toyo view camera mounted on a sturdy wooden tripod. Foreword

of the nonprofit Central Asia Institute.The book includes an essay that examines the place of photography in the Himalayan experience. The essay is concerned with the presence of Himalayan Buddhism, the evolution of mountaineering and with the mountain sublime. The Himalayas are an emblem of the ultimate challenge and the final passage between life and death. Noted mountaineer Doug Chabot has provided a foreword to the essay that describes the ideals of alpine-style mountaineering.
A donation of $5 from the sale of each book will go to the Central Asia Institute which promotes community based education and literary programs, especially for girls, in remote mountain regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan (web site: www.ikat.org.)

This
web site was created in connection with a solo exhibit at the Jorgensen
Gallery, University of Connecticut, Storrs, January–March, 2002. The show
was held in conjunction with an exhibit, The
Mystical Arts of Tibet, at the University William Benton Museum.
The site does not reproduce the sequence of photographs in the exhibit,
but it preserves their general grouping. Photographs from subsequent trips
have been added, but the book includes some photographs not on the website.
