The following information was provided by Bob Deremer, Jr: The George Bancroft was authorized in 1963, launched on March 20, 1965 and commissioned January 22, 1966. Her first two Commanding Officers were Captain Joe Williams, Jr (Blue) and Commander Walter Douglass (Gold). Thanks for the info Bob.
Bob's father, Robert Deremer Sr., served on Diesel Boats in WWII and then worked at General Dynamics/Electric Boat for about thirty years after his Naval service. Robert Sr. worked on the missile systems for the SSBN's and through him and those like him, enabled the George Bancroft and other SSBN's to be brought to life. Unfortunately, Robert Sr. has gone to join our other shipmates on eternal patrol, but we thank you Robert Deremer Sr., for all that you did to help keep us free.
