USS FRANK CABLE (AS-40)

AS-40 was my first commissioned tour. I served as the Damage Control Assistant for about 18 months, the Electrical Officer for about 6 months and the Auxiliaries Officer for 8 months.

BASIC TENDER INFO: Submarine tenders are the largest of the active auxiliaries. The crew consists of ship's force and a repair force. The FRANK CABLE is a L. Y. Spear class tender which consisted of hull numbers AS-39 through AS-41, all built by the Lockheed Shipbuilding and Construction Company. The FRANK CABLE was originally designed to tend 688 class submarines, but due to the downsizing of the Navy, she is now tasked with submarine and surface ship repairs. Currently stationed at the U. S. Naval Base, Guam

Displacement: Approx 23,493 tons at full load
Speed: Approx 20 Kts
Propulsion: Two boilers, geared turbines, one shaft, 20,000 shaft horsepower.
Crew: 97 officers, 1,266 enlisted
Armament: Two 40mm guns and four 20mm guns.
