Displacement: 7,250 Tons, Length: 425 feet, Beam: 33 feet, Draft: 31 feet 5 inches, Speed: over 25 knots, Crew: 136, Armament: Polaris missles and torpedoes.

The Calhoun's keel was laid by Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Company, Newport News, Va on 4 June 1962; Sponsored by Miss Rosalie J. Calhoun, great great granddaughter of John C. Calhoun, SSBN 630 was launched 22 June 1963. The blue crew's first CO was Commander Dean L. Axene and the gold crew's CO was Commander Frank Thurtell.

After shakedown and training along the Atlantic coast, the Calhoun began her first deterrent patrol on 22 March 1965. Initially assigned to Submarine Squadron 18, she deployed on classified undersea patrols to various oceans of the world. Throughout her career, the "Johnny C" played a vital role in America "winning" the cold war. Although decomissioned and dismantled, the memories of her crewmembers will not let her die.
