wierd neds trivia
Q: what is this page?
A: i was always interested in weird neds facts. a lot of these are e-mails from the neds-list that i hung on to. i finally decided to dedicate a page to answering strange neds questions that you might have been wondering... or never even asked yourself! the name/date is who said what and when so that credit can be given its due. some of the comments have been edited to fit on the page. hopefully i'll be able to update this periodically with new bits! enjoy!
Q: where did neds get their name from?
A: neds atomic dustbin is the name of an episode of "The Goon Show," a classic BBC radio show. Jonn's mom used to read him the stories as a kid.
Q: where are rat and mat, and why don't they play with neds at the reunion shows?
A: no one knows. it appears to be a private matter between the band members themselves and they don't talk about it.
Q: The canadian version of are you normal is different from the us version. it has extra sound samples. why?
A: The sample of Robin Williams in "Dead Poets Society" was left off the beginning of the US Are You Normal? due to copyright problems.

Q: whats are the different versions of neds god fodder-era songs???
A1) The single version of "Until
You Find Out" is actually a different
recording than the one that appears on God Fodder. It's subtle but
noticeable, the drums aren't processed with the same effect in the intro and
you can hear the higher intervals better in Rat's guitar chords towards the
beginning as well. Both versions were produced by Jessica Corcoran.
A2) The single version of "Happy"
is slightly different than the album
version as well. The album mix features that quaint instrumental fade out at
the end, with a bassline courtesy of Alex, and piano and possubly guitar
accompanying him. On the single version the piano and guitar are omitted at
the end. Otherwise the two are identical.
A3) The single version of "Kill
Your Television" (as I believe someone else
mentioned already) is also different, unless you have either the US or
Australian versions of the single. The version, like the Ingredients EP take
on "Grey Cell Green" is less produced and more simply arranged with
fewer
guitar overdubs, etc. I much prefer the God Fodder version which is actually
closer to "Kill Your Remix" in terms of arrangement (minus the beginning
and
ending clean guitar strumming).
A4) In addition there are edited
for radio mixes of "KYT" (the Shitless
Version - identical but for the removal of "shit"), "All I Ask",
and "Stuck" that appear on various promotional
singles that probably aren't worth looking for unless you're a total anal
retentive completist like myself.

Q: how did the brainbloodvolume songs come about?
A: "Capsize" was written DURING the AYN tour.
In the first bout of writing AFTER
the AYN tour, "Traffic", "Wirey",
"Stuck", "Beijing 32" and "The Dunce" were written.
The last two were
never released, but "Beijing 32" is available on a bootleg.
In their second creative spasm, they
wrote "Tempted Fate" and "Skin". The
latter is unreleased, but "Tempted Fate" was released as "A Tempted
Fate".
In their third go at songwriting,
they created "Off The Wagon Into The
Barrel", "Take Me To The Cleaners", "A Tool For Boring",
and "Perfectly
Rounded". "A Tool For Boring" was renamed "Borehole"
for BBV.
The band then recorded a demo with
these six songs from the last two
writing sessions: "Tempted Fate", "Skin", "Off The
Wagon Into The Barrel",
"Take Me To The Cleaners", "A Tool For Boring" and "Perfectly
Rounded".
Of these, only "Skin" and "Off The Wagon Into The Barrel"
are unreleased.
In the fourth spurt of writing, they
penned "All I Ask Of Myself Is That I
Hold Together", "Your Only Joke" and "Premonition".
All three made it to
BBV.
These last three were recorded to
a second demo, and soon work on the
third album began in earnest, with the neds having negotiated greater
input into the production aspect of the album.

Q: whats up with "intact: the singles collection?"
A: sony released it in 1998 after dropping the band in 1995, in an obvious effort to get any penny they could from the ned's library. neds had no input as to the tracks included, or the artrwrk, and i believe didnt even know about it till after it was in stores. that's why it doesn't look like any of the other neds cd's. the color of the cover art is different between the canadian and us releases.

Q: what is "the hamster that ate k'ford"?
A: the hamster that ate k'ford is
neds first demo tape. all of the tracks on it are also on 8 year half-life (only
with different names). the track listing is:
1) first to fall
2) rain and dust and places and stuff
3) ripped and torn
4) plug me in
5) drowning
Q: why can't i find "8 year half-life"?
A: 8 year half life was a product of the neds-list e-mail group. khadejah, mike b, and myself (artwork) made the cd. about 50 of them were made for list members, at an original selling price of $10 - thus it was not an official release. at the request of the band (they were embarassed of their early beginnings) no more were made. they are exceptionally rare and have gone for sale on ebay for over $200. since the originals were all cd-r's, there is no way to tell if the one you have is an original print - unless you bought it.
the tracks are made up of early demos (see above) and a live show recorded 6/9/1995 in Mountain View, CA USA
1) first to fall
2) turn around
3) out of my tree
4) take me away
5 )inside out upside down
6) drowning
7) bejing 32
